Outside of the main countries that produce whiskey (Scotland, Ireland, America, Canada) there are many other countries that are producing their own versions, most notably in Australia, Denmark, India, Japan, Germany and Sweden.
Mainly modeled after single malt scotch , Japanese whiskies are increasing in popularity and are highly regarded. Many believed that single malt whisky produced outside of Scotland could not measure up to the standards of the original, but recently that has been proven wrong with a few distilleries from Japan earning several top honors in international competitions and blind taste tests.
